A Mini Vacation in the Florida Keys.

  'A Mini Vacation in
the Florida Keys?

A short vacation in the Florida Keys? For one, two or three days’ only? Where should we go?These are questions that people often asked me, and these are people just like you who want to discover the charm of this geographic region but don't have all the time in the world to see it all!

Certainly having only one or two days it's a very short time to cover so much territory! But that doesn’t mean that you cannot have a great time with us, if you plan ahead of time, know where to go and what to do.

The Florida Keys are over 1000 islands gathered on an area of 137 square miles, but in this vast territory there are some special feature attractions and areas of interest where we can have a terrific vacation time.

See the entire Florida Keys territory here.

But first things first!  Considering where you are right now and the time that you might have available it's the plan to fallow for a vacation in Florida. .

But first things first!  Considering where you are right now and the time that you might have available it's the plan to fallow for a vacation in Florida.

The most, economical and enjoyable way for us here is South Florida it's to drive from the southern tip of the Florida Turn Pike, south of Miami into the Keys, driving over highway US 1 (Scenic Highway, Florida Keys Highway, or the Overseas Highway

It takes only a full tank of gas... (gas is some times cheaper in Miami than in the Keys or Key West so fill your tank before you leave)...and 4 hours to make it to Key West by road and Key West is the farther and southernmost point on the US territory...90 miles south is Cuba! Besides driving your own or a rented vehicle gives you the freedom and flexibility of stopping anywhere you like.

How else can you get here? If you are anywhere in the West Coast of the Florida Peninsula, let’s say Tampa or Fort Myers, then you can take the Key West Express-Ferry Boat from Tampa to Key West, and return the same way. This trip take from 3 to 4 hours record time by sea; or just fly into the Key West Airport from one of the airports abroad...Rent a car at the airport, tour the city and then head to highway US 1 for the rest of the Florida Keys

So now we are in Key West!

Key West or the "Conch Republic" as the locals "Conchs" named, it's a city full of attractions and interesting places to visit, just to have a great time, without having to spend a great deal of your precious money and time.

In just one day you will be able to cover most of the city's territory, you might not see it all but a good portion of it. Best option would be to take a city tour bus or the Conch Train to see most of the important points and historic sites, the rest of the day is around the Mallory Square, Duval Street, the Old Historic Sea Port, and then head for the Southernmost Point and the beaches.

Key West most popular land mark, the Southernmost Point

*It's always a group of tourists at the Southernmost Point.

The Southernmost Point is the most to be visited and prominent land mark in Key West, it marks the physical limit of the U.S territory and it's surrounded by a number of tourist attractions and historic sites; and visiting these historic sites will help you understand the origins of the Conch Republic and the Florida Keys. In fact the Old Town and the Historic Seaport are historic areas located near most of the tourist's attractions, like Mallory Square and Duval Street.

The Hemingway's House and the town's museums are a source of nourishment for the intellectual minds, and the beaches of Key West are among the best in the Florida Keys.

*There are a few places along the Florida Keys Highway where you can stop to rest, next to the shore, small beaches of shallow water, but the best beaches are at the Bahia Honda State Park at MM 37, the beaches in Key West, and Sombrero Beach in Marathon Key (for this last one take Sombrero Beach Road (from US 1 at MM 54)...all the way to the very end) More about the Florida Keys Beaches.

Where to go in Key Largo?

Key Largo which is at one hour drive south from Miami and three hours north from Key West it probably has the best known scuba diving and snorkeling sites of the entire Florida Keys Marine Sanctuary. So for a diving vacation in the Florida Keys, Key Largo it's a place to consider.

In Key Largo you could visit the John Pennekamp State Park for a day, kayak on the paddling trails of the park, take a snorkeling trip, glass bottom boat, or stay at the park's campsite for a night or two. About diving in Key largo.

Swimming with trained dolphins at the Dolphin Cove of Key Largo has always great reviews....It's regarded as a fantastic experience, highly recommended for the entire family, and don't forget your photos! Key Largo's places.

Snorkeling charter from John Pennekamp.

*Diving and snorkeling at the John Pennekamp's Underwater Coral Reef's Marine Sanctuary.

Would you go fish in Islamorada?

Islamorada "The Village of Islands “or the "Fishing Capital of the World" is a direct invitation for a fishing trip into the waters of the Straits of Florida. So go fishing on a party fishing boat from any of the marinas. At the town's marinas you'll find all of the fishing trips that you can think of, ....some fishing charters are high priced when it comes to go out the open seas are all day long private charters but you don't have to spend too much if you take a party fishing boat and share time and space with other anglers. The towns marinas.

Other places good for a quick stop and to visit in Islamorada are  Robbie's Marina, the World Sportsman Center, the History of Diving Museum, and the Theater of the Sea. The Islamorada's attractions.

Tourists at Robbie's Marina, hand feeding tarpon fish.

Robbie's Marina a great place to visit in Islamorada.

Marathon, the heart of the Florida Keys.

Marathon is a quiet family oriented community with a good share of attractions, if you are looking for a decent beach in the Florida Keys, I will recommend Sombrero Beach, and it’s a small sandy beach, in the vicinity of a residential neighborhood...directions? Sombrero Beach Rd (US 1 at MM 54) to the end.

Visiting the Crane Point Nature Center, the Wild Bird Rehabilitation Centers and the Dolphin Research Center will take a good portion of the day but are great places to learn about the history, the plants, and the wild life of this region.

One more place where you should stop in Marathon is the Old Seven Mile Bridge, for sightseeing and taking great scenic photos alongside the bridge, besides walking over the bridge you can get to Pigeon Key, that tiny historic island that you'll see at the end of the Old Bridge. See what's in Marathon..!

A guided tour of Crane Point.

Tourists on a guided tour of Crane Point Museum, Nature Trails & Wild Bird Rescue Center.

At Big Pine Key and the Lower Keys to see the Key Deer.

Big Pine Key and the rest of the Lower Keys are nature retreats, near the National Wild Life and Key Deer Refuge, this is the home of the Key Deer, the Great White Heron and other endangered animal species. The best times to see the deer roaming around the neighborhoods is at dusk or down.

One great place to visit during your vacation in the Florida Keys that is near Big Pine is the Bahia Honda State Park  beaches, nature trails and campsites, Bahia Honda is located at a short distance from Key West and near Looe Key's Reef for snorkeling.

A great place to visit in the Lower Keys is the Little Palm Island Resort in Little Torch Key (it's not cheap but you get the dollar value in return) This private, secluded and isolated fantastic Caribbean stylish island can be visited for just one day by making a reservation for the restaurant, and the only way to get there is on board of the resort's boat, "The Truman"so if you have the money to expend go to the island. It's a great place for romance, honey moons and anniversaries! Big Pine and Lower Keys Attractions.

Key Deers resting under trees.

During the day hours and the afternoon the key deer rests, seeking cover from the high temperatures.

The question is whether you just want to target a particular area for this short vacation in the Florida Keys or pay a quick visit too all of them passing throw the main areas here mentioned. Pinpoint the places that you are interested on visiting, get all the most available information, and make a plan of action and a pre-trip itinerary.

*One thing that you need to know is that hotels, campsites, car rentals, air fare, and tours most of the time need to be book in advance, particularly during the winter months from October to March.

My recommended restaurants to visit with my own *****rating taking in consideration, the food quality, location, the atmosphere and the service.
