Our Travel Guide to
the Florida Keys.

Written so you can get here fast, easy and without any travel hustles!

A travel guide is simply a set of information for anyone who needs guidance and advice on getting somewhere! And these Florida Keys travel instructions are the solution now, since you are already thinking on travelling to this vacation wonderland.

Getting here is relatively very easy ! It all depends on where you are now.

To begin this journey and this Florida Keys road guide…Let’s assume that you are already in the state of Florida.

Getting to the Florida Keys if you are anywhere within the estate of Florida (like we do), finding your way to Hwy US- 1 (Old American Road) is not a problem.

Only 120 miles separates the Florida main land with the farther point of the Florida Keys, which is Key West, the farther and southernmost city on the US.

US highway -1(Florida Keys Scenic Highway) was built as a series of bridges and roads, connecting the Florida Keys.

Beginning at the 0 mile marker in Key West, going North. Or at the very end of the Florida Turnpike in Florida City, going South.

Either way is an enjoyable ride through the beautiful scenarios of the Florida Keys!

There are basically a few different approaches on getting to the Florida Keys Highway(US-1)

The best basic rule that we want to stress on this road guide is that always when in doubt all you need to do is find your way to the Florida Turn Pike (Hwy-821) direction south (the Turnpike ends in Florida City where you take US-1 to the Florida Keys)

So first drive south on the Turn Pike until you get to the Miami area.

Keep going always south to city of Homestead, then Florida City after where you will get to the end of the Turn Pike.

Now you will find US 1 (also named Dixie Hwy)  you will head straight to our favorite destination…The Florida Keys.

What are the other basic ways to get here?

  • If you take the I-95 to Miami and keep going south, it will take you directly to Hwy US-1and the Florida Keys. (the problem with this route it will be the heavy traffic delays at certain hours)-it will take you longer.

  • If your are traveling from any of the cities of the west coast of Florida, like Tampa, Sarasota, Cape Coral, and Naples, your best option is to travel via I- 75 south until reaching the Florida’s Turn Pike Homestead Extension (Florida 821 Toll Road) after Miramar or (Miramar Parkway) once on the Turnpike don’t stop until you reach the Florida Keys.

Some areas of the Florida Turnpike of the South Miami areas have the Turnpike Electronic Payment System by plate active, but some others on the North Florida Turnpike are still using the traditional payment system-All Cash Vehicles Lines or the Prepaid Sun Pass Toll Lines.

Normally change for cash and information are provided at the cash booths on the Turnpike.

Drive to the proper line-fallow the signs and instructions.

  • You could continue traveling south on I-75 without taking the Turnpike-( the I-75 will turn to the left at some point going east now, still is I-75,) best known by Alligator Alley or Everglades Pkwy-going toward the east now.
  • When you get to the point of the Palmetto Expressway(hwy-826)-then head south on hwy- 826,( take the Miami exit -to your right- where you will find Hwy 826), (pass Hialeah, then the Miami International Airport) keep going south on Hwy-826 on Miami (after you pass the area of the airport stay driving on the left or center lines of traffic)

Now after you pass the exit for SW 40 th street (Bird Road) in South Miami -get to the far left lane were you will find Hwy 874 or the so call-(Dan Shula Expressway)...the sign reads\South-Turnpike\ Yellow|Arrows| Only.

Hwy 874 takes you to Hwy 821 (the extension of the Florida Turnpike going south toward US-1, our beloved Highway to the Florida Keys.
