'Key West, Florida.

The Southernmost City of the USA.

Locally known as the "Conch Republic". Key West, in Florida, seats at the southernmost point of the US, just about 130 miles southwest of the big city of Miami. It's the last one of the Florida Keys that we get to after driving southwest and all the way to the end of the Florida Keys Highway, US 1.

This is this picturesque Caribbean influenced town with nice and friendly people welcoming visitors from around the world. There is not a place like this to have fun.! And here we are "One Human Family"

The land of the never ending vacation, eternal life celebration and the million attractions! 24 hours a day, from sun rise to sun rise the city lives.

For the outsider, now a "guest of honor at the Conch Republic " this place is razor captivating...

We came here for a visit and later we did not want to go back home. Also many of the people that we meet were previous visitors that end up moving here.

This charming and festive mood is probably the reason why of all of the cities of the Florida Keys, it's the one with more inhabitants...The charm of Key West!

For the outsider, now a "guest of honor at the Conch Republic " this place is razor captivating... We did not want to go back home after our first visit and many of the people that we meet were previous visitors that end up moving here.

As we go around this town we find historical sites, museums, the light house, great shopping boutiques and many other fascinating places.

Also the residences where famous cultural and political personalities lived.

Street entertainment is not missing a moment. There is a local artistic wave that can be appreciated and that is very typical of the Florida Keys.

The city's Old Town and its attractions.

There is the so called "old town" on the north west side of the city were the historic district is located, a major tourist destination and a must to see attraction.

 Places to visit in this part of the city:

  • Truman Annex and Fort Zachary Taylor State Park.

  • The Harry Truman Little White House.

Duval is packed with art galleries, restaurants, bars, shops and other things. It's a 24 hr action and touristic entertainment venue.

Historic sites, haunted places and the art.

At the beginning there were nothing but bones scattered all over this island. Why? The native American tribes of South Florida were using it as a burial ground, that's why during the discovery by Ponce De Leon and his crew of brave Spanish sailors, right after crossing the Atlantic searching for the “Fountain of Youth” named the island "Cayo Hueso" "Island of Bones"...But why don't we just dig into the History of this town deep down the years?

So, we could say that this is in a high degree a historical town, logical reason why you'll find so many historic sites around this city. Here is where the Florida Keys modern evolution begun with the first settlers...the wrecking fever...Henry Flager's Gold Coast Railroad Bridge ...the Florida Keys Highway...and here we are now in the "Conch Republic"

A great part of the Florida Keys History is remaining intact after all this year's. And with so much history around there are also the ghost stories and tales of the after life that every little charming town shares.

This is also a very artistic town that had produced a substantial amount of artists and a unique art style.

Culturally Key West is to open for experimentation and since the old times of the pirates, wreckers, smugglers and outlaws new trends had influence the life of the Conch Republic.

Right now you'll find a great deal of the 1960's "peace and love" and liberation philosophy here, lots of well inspired art by local transcendental artists.

Famous and talented artists had made Key West their home in the past and had left their legasy and artistic influence throughout the town, a vivid example is Ernest Hemingway who found inspiration and solace in this island in the 1930"s.

Cultural history takes an important role and its foot prints are scattered everywhere...You cannot possibly come here without noticing the uniqueness of the history and the culture.

The new Southernmost Republic it's a top tourist destination and a rendezvous for a good time.

The Westin Hotel is conveniently located next to the Mallory Square.

You'll find a large supply of motels, hotels, and guest houses around this old town area if you want to stay close to these attractions here mentioned.

Traveling and getting around the city.

The most used way of getting to this tropical paradise (comparison used by more than one visitor) is via US 1(also known by Scenic Highway or Florida Keys Highway)

But if getting here faster is an option, is good to know that...there is one busy airport located in the east side of the central business district that receives regular flights from Miami, FL. Fort Lauderdale, FL. Orlando, FL. Tampa, FL. Fort Myers, FL. Atlanta, GA. Charlotte, NC. Baltimore, MD, and other parts of the world.

Also is a seaport destination for passenger cruise ships.

The first cruise ship was the Sunward in 1969, and it duck at the Navy's pier at the Truman Annex.

Now you see the cruise ships of Carnival,Royal Caribbean or Disney Cruise Line at the dock of the Mallory Square.

Mallory Square is a famous plaza located in the water front, side by side the cruise ship port in the Key West Old Town.

Every evening hundreds of locals and tourist arrive at the square for the Sunset Celebration, just to celebrate...Well, the sunset, which is a scene of great resplendence here...Celebrate the "Glory of the Sunset" and the night life begins at the Conch Republic.

Remember that Key West is unique, not a copy cat of other towns, the Conch Republic culture grow up here, and what you see and do here is also unique...So now we have a better idea of what Key West Florida is all about!

One place that every visitor must go ,is the Southernmost Point of the Continental U.S.A...90 miles south is Cuba-across the Straits of Florida.
